Stuff from Stephers

I used to share a blog with Melissa, but she's been MIA for a few months, so I made it all mine! Random thoughts on my every day life to bore you with.

Today during a counseling session a silverfish fell from the ceiling about an inch from my head. I was with kids so I was sitting on the floor and luckily it ran the other way when it landed because I have NO idea the effect it has on kids when your counselor stands up and starts screaming. Silverfish are the most disgusting bug ever. Right up there with roaches. I would have died if that thing landed on me.

So I spent this weekend in la la land. I got pretty much nothing accomplished but it was the best weekend! I worked on Saturday. Ok, maybe that wasn't the best. The assistant manager fired me twice in one night. Of course he was joking. After that we (who is this we? me and the split personality I guess. I wrote that and then realized it, so I'll leave it there for everyone to be as confused as I am) went to Perry's to watch UFC. By watch UFC I mean drink and talk to Misty. And then to a cute curly headed boy. Who I talked to until 6am. After which I was so tired that I left Perry's house and proceeded to go South on I35 far from the right way to get home. Nice. I slept a lot and caught up and then went downtown with said curly headed boy. We caught a "show" from the roof of Iron Cactus. There was a girl dancing in the window of Co-op. We've always known that place was slightly ghetto (maybe it's the smell of vomit when you walk in) but now we are sure of it. She was humping the air and had her shirt tied up to right under her chest. Classy. After that we hit Blind Pig and then Pure where we danced for the rest of the night. I'm totally beat (tired AND bruised from falling down walking back up to my apartment) from the weekend but I can't stop smiling so it's all ok.

One more step

Guess what I did last night? I submitted my intent to graduate!! So it's official, put December 15th on your calendars because that's the day you will all start calling me Master!! I had just watched The Pursuit of Happyness so I think it made me feel all the more triumphant about doing it.

Dynamic Duo

Sunday was the first day of my new job. Granted I've worked there before so I didn't need as much help as a brand newbie might, but they seriously sent me to the wolves. Training consisted of...well...nothing. I watched some videos that told me not much at all and then went out to the floor. At one point the store manager asked how I was doing selling the store card and I was like, well...I'm feeling a little overwhelmed so maybe when I get more used to this I can try to do that some more. I KNOW it isn't hard, but when 80% of the job is finding things on the floor and you don't know where anything is it takes you a little longer. Surprisingly, the one person who was there to help me most of the day was this little lady who speaks almost no English. We were quite the team. She refolded everything I folded and pointed me in the direction when she saw me looking lost. And I ran interference when people tried to ask her questions. I really like this lady, and I KNOW she's cool cause when she went on break she said "bye lady" and we all know that "lady" is my favorite NOLA term. So I think we're a pretty good team and that's how my first day with an eight hour shift went.

Off the Streets and on the Creeks

I recently decided to explore a system of trails behind my apartment that are apparently part of the Great Hills Park We have been going out on a daily hike for a couple of days now and she loves it. She gets to play in the water and even spend a couple minutes off of the leash each day (ahem.... I have been taking the Saffstereven though there is a strict "animals on leash" rule). It's really pretty empty and the trails and creek are an easy walk. We've seen lots of different types of wildlife too. It's interesting because Saffy seems terrified to go down this one trail and I can't quite figure it out. She hasn't been afraid of any of the wildlife we've seen so I can't imagine what it is that she's trying to avoid. Whatever it is, these hikes are a good way to get her tuckered out for a while and we'd love to have some company if anyone wants to join us!

Yo ho ho

I feel like I look like a pirate today. Something about looking like a pirate probably makes me look very un-counsloresque but I don't care.

Dear Diary,
School starts for me again today. I'm sort of nervous and I don't know why. I think it's because I also got a lot busier at my internship and I also applied for a part-time job the other day. All those things combined mean that I won't have as much time as I do now. I'm trying to not stress myself out about it. I'm also trying to eat healthier and it seems like a lot of times it's really easy to meet people for lunch or happy hour but then I eat horribly so I have to figure out a way to spend time with people doing things other than eating. I mean yes, I'll still eat, but going out to eat is expensive and it's hard to know exactly how bad or good the food is for you. I need to run errands before class so that's all for now diary.

How being a bridesmaid is like being a high school cheerleader

First, some terminology:
cheerleader = bridesmaid
team = marital couple

game = ceremony
coach = priest/preacher/officiate/etc

game book = Bible

Being in a wedding and being a cheerleader are some of the few times when it's considered cool to be wearing the same outfit to an event. Besides wearing a
planned uniform, there are special shoes and usually hair or make-up considerations. The goal is to look similar without being too clone-like. Usually, these uniforms cost more than they should. As in any event with a bunch of women/girls there is the possibility for some drama and neither cheerleaders nor bridesmaids are immune to this. In preparation for the big game the cheerleader often decorates the locker room or makes goodie bags for the team in the same way that a bridesmaid does nice little things to help out the bride (making programs, preparing an emergency day-of kit, etc.). A pep-rally may be thrown for a team while a shower is thrown for a couple. Hanging out with the team before the game is common (ok, I was a very stereotypical cheerleader and the cheerleaders and football players hung out at the head coach's house the night before a game). This is similar to hanging out with a bride the day of the wedding or the day before. There are usually photographers at both events and while they aren't exactly there to get photos of you (as a cheerleader or bridesmaid) it's pretty much a sure bet that they will take some. And while you aren't the center of attention you get to be known pretty well because you're standing in front of everyone, and as a cheerleader your name is on your megaphone and as a bridesmaid your name is in the program. As a cheerleader you carry pom-poms and as a bridesmaid you carry a bouquet. You have a formation that you stand in for both a wedding and a football game. This formation is something you have practiced getting into. Cheerleaders have a captain and bridesmaids have a maid of honor. For both events rain is a bad sign but you'd stand out there through it if asked to. After the game everyone goes out and celebrates just like a wedding reception (ok, maybe not EVERYONE goes out and celebrates but it's just lame not to). There's music - at a game in the form of a band and at the reception either band or dj. And when there's music there is dancing. There's usually a couple people acting a fool. I'm sure there must be more, but the last thing here... in the south both football and getting married are a big deal making the positions of cheerleader and bridesmaid all the more popular.

Say hello to my little friend

Read the title with the Scarface accent please... OK, so the other day I walked out the door to find that I had been left this:
And this little guy wouldn't move no matter what I did. For hours I had to carry the dog and groceries, etc over the baby deer. It didn't move for anything although sometimes it did start making this little snarly face that was oh so not scary. It really did blend in with the doormat but I was worried about it. I consulted many people about what to do. This website was somewhat helpful. Apparently baby deers sometimes get left during the day by moms who come back for them. Luckily, when I came home from counseling at about dusk I saw that it's mom had picked it up and was feeding it dinner. So it was a happy ending even if I didn't get paid for the babysitting.

Get me an Ark!

Want to know what's scary? When you think you're the last person in the building and there's a storm-a-brewin' and the lights go out during your counseling session with a kid. Then, to make matters worse, the dad is like "I think everyone needs to get out of here now!" and then the other counselor who was in the building jets and you're the last person there trying to figure out if you should clean the room or run, and then you have to try to turn everything off and lock-up like normal all while you think you're going to blow away. OK, so that was scary, but then driving home when I was on the toll road overpass the water was blowing UP onto the toll road so it was coming down on me, sideways, and it was also sort of cresting over my car in wave fashion. I probably almost wrecked staring at the wave of water coming up over the toll road. All the while I kept thinking about how the scrolly thing at the bottom of the tv had said to take cover before I left to go counsel. Oh, and I really need new windshield wipers. Rough night!

It will never stop being weird to me when things disappear in my apartment. WHERE is my foot pumice thing? I KNOW I didn't take it out of the shower, I KNOW it didn't dissolve, WTF?!
